When money was particularly tight she was walking through alleys when she overheard a Barrister hiring some criminals to sabotage a competitor. She made her way to the other competitor and parlayed her knowledge into a job. She became a Barrister soon after.

Motivation: Find a way to reverse the transformation of her brother; and doesn't want to be a barrister and was forced into it by her family
