He did not win them back, but he came to a realization. To get what you want from life, you must take it. He used his abilities to trick people and travel the world for free.

Perhaps she's slightly insane, or otherwise so mentally alien to the rest of the world that she plain doesn't fit in. She has dedicated herself to building a better village for her children.
