History: He was born to loving parents in a slum to the west. In his youth he was part of a gang. He got caught, but did not rat out his comrades and served his time in prison. He left for the west, certain he would find work there.

Motivation: He is being blackmailed/forced/etc and this influences his actions; and a rival would like him out of the picture

He found a children's book about a Human Paladin who fought for good and justice and never realised it was just a child's story. He modeled his life after the story, seeing himself destined a hero. Anselm decided he wanted neither the life of his father nor that of the evil petty criminals he associated with. During his early adolescence, he took a sudden opportunity while working the docks and commandeered a vessel that was left unmanned. He has gone from town to town till he finds a spot where he can set up a sustainable business.
