Because they were valued, his mother taught him to defend himself. When his mother died while fighting orcs, the young Roger began to lead the lost caravan. Through the years after Ida was born, her mother became increasingly distant from her family, instead choosing to pursue power in the west. Ida's mother didn't care for her much, and the feeling was mutual. She was betrayed by a partner and left for dead, teaching her a humbling lesson in trusting others.
