Her uncle (a powerful person with enemies on both sides of the law) took her in and had her trained in basic self defense. She was always very intelligent and has formed a secret society of philosophers.

She advanced relatively quickly due to her good work ethic, understanding of the chain of command, and natural leadership ability. She now has a substantial network of resources ranging from contacts to ships to peers.
