Emma grew up in the orphanage, tormented by the older kids and famished from lack of food. To avoid death by starvation, most orphans take to a life of crime or prostitution (often both), and so did Emma. She was betrayed by a partner and left for dead, teaching her a humbling lesson in trusting others.
