Because her father participated in the massacre of their homeland, giants burned their ranch to the ground and forced them out. She was preparing to flee to the north, but the outbreak of war prevented her and her mother from journeying north to reunite her family. She moves from town to town, unable to find a place to settle.

Personality: She considers herself the protector of her home. She feels this is her duty and calling. Her respect, as difficult as one would find it to earn, is unwavering; those who more than prove themselves to her, a bar set well above any reasonable standard, she tolerates in varying degrees. Though less modest and more hasty in her reactions to snap at those who irritate her, Mardred is combative with any and all who dare try her patience in the slightest.
