When their plan failed the mentor lashed out against both of them and fled. One night she noticed a nearby shooting star which she hiked out to see where it landed. It turned out to be an ancient artifact of some kind. She has done her darndest to repair it but it is currently non-functional.

History: Maynild was born the youngest of three triplets. Her father disappeared, and while she tried to raise money to find her father, she was betrayed dozens of times. She was betrayed by a partner and left for dead, teaching her a humbling lesson in trusting others.

History: Bernard lived on a farm with his father, near the main road leading to a nearby town. In his 14th year, his parents were killed by a gnolls raid, leaving Bernard alone in the world. After a stint in an orphanage, he was adopted. By chance he met his brother recently and the two have been together since.

History: He was born in the south, but his parents moved at a very young age to the east. When money was particularly tight he was walking through alleys when he overheard a Bookbinder hiring some criminals to sabotage a competitor. He made his way to the other competitor and parlayed his knowledge into a job. He was recently attacked on the road and savagely beaten by bandits.
