Perhaps he's slightly insane, or otherwise so mentally alien to the rest of the world that he plain doesn't fit in. He bought a dagger and has really upped his game hunting, due to his understanding of decoy and ambush.

He made his way to the other competitor and parlayed his knowledge into a job. He got away from his former life and has fallen to alcoholism.
