She was recently attacked on the road and savagely beaten by bandits.

History: He was born a particularly ugly child, much to the horror of his parents. His homeland was ravaged by war and he spent much of his life rebuilding it. He eventually got the idea of being the protector of his homeland from reading books, and has made it his duty.

Perhaps she's slightly insane, or otherwise so mentally alien to the rest of the world that she plain doesn't fit in. She was granted divine powers by her dying brother.
