To avoid death by starvation, most orphans take to a life of crime or prostitution (often both), and so did Cressel. He left for the north, certain he would find work there.

History: Born to a poor family in the city he treasured whatever gifts he got. His spouse left him for another, whom he beat to an almost bloody pulp. He did not win them back, but he came to a realization. To get what you want from life, you must take it. He has been saving his money to try and buy his brother's freedom.

Motivation: Find a way to reverse the transformation of his brother; and doesn't want to be a tanner and was forced into it by his family

History: When she was but 5 years old her parents immigrated from the south. In her formative years she discovered how persuasive she was. She began using that to her advantage selling useless wares at inflated prices. She has been a successful dealer in antiques buying low and selling high.

Personality: Veloptima is depressed about a lot of things. She tends to be a nihilist. As long as the job gets done she does not care how it got done.

History: Born in the east to a Farmer, Veloptima learned a great deal about her mother's area of expertise. A gifted student she started as a Layabout, but she got bored and became a Farmer. She now owns her own business.
