History: Vondal was raised in a hard working conservative environment. He went to a religious school and was inspired by the priests there in charitable deeds. He was betrayed by a partner and left for dead, teaching him a humbling lesson in trusting others.

Motivation: To find somewhere to settle down; and he is compelled to act according to his religious beliefs

Aside from being a slave or a gladiator, there isn't much legitimate work for Dragonborns in Raiann's homeland. Raiann decided to take the middle way and become a bodyguard. She left for the east, certain she would find work there.
