As a very small child her family refused to pay dues to a local crime lord, who ordered them killed. She was betrayed by a partner and left for dead, teaching her a humbling lesson in trusting others.

Perhaps she's slightly insane, or otherwise so mentally alien to the rest of the world that she plain doesn't fit in. She knows her nephew is from a royal line that had remained secret for centuries, but promised not to tell anyone. So far, no-one knows but her.
