In her 14th year, her parents were killed by a giants raid, leaving Jo alone in the world. After a stint in an orphanage, she was adopted. She has been helping groups of widows and orphans who have fled abusive spouses or lost their families to giants.

History: Her parents moved while she was still in utero so she is the first generation to be born here. She dropped out of school before completing her studies. She moves from town to town, unable to find a place to settle.
