He would practice along the way and, when he arrived, be apprenticed to a Bellfounder. He ran away from his former home and has been making his living as a Bellfounder for the past few years.

When she came of age, she applied for a position with her town's local guard, looking to work her way up via merit and eventually become a Commoner in service of a powerful lord somewhere. She was an athlete and attended two major summer competitions. She never won. She has became unsatisfied with her lot in life, and decided to take up adventuring.
