However, he heard that his mother had died fighting off the goblins.

Perhaps he's slightly insane, or otherwise so mentally alien to the rest of the world that he plain doesn't fit in. He is untrained/undisciplined, which makes him dangerous.

A few years later when the east was not economically sound they moved to her current location. After a long history of fighting, Jane and her spouse have recently divorced.
