Motivation: A rival would like him out of the picture; and he is being blackmailed/forced/etc and this influences his actions

The man easily evaded and defeated him, leaving him to live broken and terrified. He has taken up leadership of the village's small militia in response to dire rats demanding more tribute than usual.
