He found his father impaled in their home, and his mother beheaded. He saw the man who walked out, and charged him in a blind rage. Aside from being a slave or a gladiator, there isn't much legitimate work for Half-Elves in Ernest's homeland. Ernest decided to take the middle way and become a bodyguard.
