History: Qualen was born the youngest of three triplets. As a young child he wandered into the woods despite his father's warnings against it. Afterwards he claimed he had encountered illithids who tried to eat his hand. He has been saving his money to try and buy his sister's freedom.

Motivation: His name or reputation has been wronged in the past by illithids, and he desires to right it; and find a way to reverse the transformation of his sister
