Through the years after Shax was born, her mother became increasingly distant from her family, instead choosing to pursue power in the east. Shax's mother didn't care for her much, and the feeling was mutual. She has gone from town to town working and never settling down anywhere, but has fallen for a local Bookbinder. She hasn't told them the truth, but wants to settle down with them.

Kansif grew up in the orphanage, tormented by the older kids and famished from lack of food. To avoid death by starvation, most orphans take to a life of crime or prostitution (often both), and so did Kansif. She was recently attacked on the road and savagely beaten by bandits.
