To avoid death by starvation, most orphans take to a life of crime or prostitution (often both), and so did Ellywick. She became a Actor soon after.

She began using that to her advantage selling useless wares at inflated prices. She knows her nephew is from a royal line that had remained secret for centuries, but promised not to tell anyone.
