Qualen grew up in the orphanage, tormented by the older kids and famished from lack of food. To avoid death by starvation, most orphans take to a life of crime or prostitution (often both), and so did Qualen. He has became unsatisfied with his lot in life, and decided to take up adventuring.

History: He served in the navy to pay for his family's outstanding loans. His family was turned out during the war. He and his family wandered south to less war torn lands. He was recently attacked on the road and savagely beaten by bandits.
