It turned out to be an ancient artifact of some kind. He has done his darndest to repair it but it is currently non-functional.

History: He was born the only child of a wealthy merchant. He moved from fad to fad and when he turned 15 he discovered writing. He now has a substantial network of resources ranging from contacts to ships to peers.

History: Born to a poor family in the city she treasured whatever gifts she got. While she appears to be a normal Halfling, she's... not quite right. Perhaps she's slightly insane, or otherwise so mentally alien to the rest of the world that she plain doesn't fit in. She routinely visits covens of witches but complains that many are fraudulent and lack true knowledge of magic.

History: Purah was born into a poor family. Growing up, she dreamt of becoming a Expert, to bring honor to her family’s name. When she came of age, she applied for a position with her town's local guard, looking to work her way up via merit and eventually become a Expert in service of a powerful lord somewhere. She was an adventurer many years ago and she formed a blood bond with her Halfling companion (her 'brother'). She has dedicated herself to building a better world.

Since her father passed away years ago, her mother had doted on her, and she came to think her herself as special and better than other people in town. A notion that was reinforced by her attractiveness, a trait in which she easily excels the other women of her town. She has built up a small fortune and can afford her own way.
