He became a Painter soon after.

History: He was a bastard born out of an affair, and his father always resented and mistreated him for it out of spite. Through the years after Theodoric was born, his father became increasingly distant from his family, instead choosing to pursue power in the north. Theodoric's father didn't care for him much, and the feeling was mutual. He has dedicated himself to building a better trade route.

Motivation: He wants to meet his childhood hero; and a strong sense of loyalty to tabaxi people

Perhaps he's slightly insane, or otherwise so mentally alien to the rest of the world that he plain doesn't fit in. He was recently attacked on the road and savagely beaten by bandits.

Motivation: He is not mentally stable, and does not behave rationally.
