It turned out to be an ancient artifact of some kind. He has done his darndest to repair it but it is currently non-functional.

A notion that was reinforced by her attractiveness, a trait in which she easily excels the other women of her town. She leaves a trail of broken hearts and full pockets wherever she goes.

Motivation: Her name or reputation has been wronged in the past by dire rats, and she desires to right it.

Personality: His tongue was cut out and he uses sign language. On top of that he is swayed by a pretty face, and while loyalty to his employer will always come first he doesn't like to hit women.

History: He was born a particularly ugly child, much to the horror of his parents. He was part of a huge silver rush, which was taken over by a mining company. The company confiscated a lot of silver, but the shipment was lost. During his travels, Astar and his party rested in a cavern that was (unknown to them) infused with powerful dark magic. Upon awakening, Astar discovered the rest of his party dead, transformed into horrible, mindless undead versions of their former selves. Astar fled the cavern, stopping for breath at a small pool, and only then realizing his own horrible transformation.
