His uncle (a powerful person with enemies on both sides of the law) took him in and had him trained in basic self defense. He has made many enemies by not giving into corruption and outing many instances of it.

In the process these unassuming Gnomes became a terror of the countryside. She was recently attacked on the road and savagely beaten by bandits.

Motivation: She is a bit of a kleptomaniac; and she is being blackmailed/forced/etc and this influences her actions
