History: Thiala hails from a village terrorized by dire rats. She was a friend to animals and a trickster. In her defense of animals however she would do severe harm to people. She knows her nephew is from a royal line that had remained secret for centuries, but promised not to tell anyone. So far, no-one knows but her.

Motivation: Her name or reputation has been wronged in the past by dire rats, and she desires to right it.

History: Gardain lived on a farm with his father, near the main road leading to a nearby town. He was an apprentice working in his father's forge. He left for the north, certain he would find work there.
